FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Our slope is a 9m x 5m skiing area with a belt of white carpet that simulates a well groomed
piste. The speed is adjustable from zero to 30 kilometers per hour (18mph) and the slope is
adjustable
from 13° to 22°
No! Our slope offers something to challenge all levels of skier or boarder. The big advantage of the infinity slope is that you can keep turning for as long as your legs can cope. This means that if you have difficulty with a particular part of skiing, our instructors can help you fine tune your technique to get the best you can from your time in the mountains.
If you are already a competent skier/boarder, our slope is also fantastic for fitness and keeping the muscles working while practicing your skills in the off season.
If you skied for an hour at full speed it would be the equivalent of skiing non stop from the top of Everest to sea level.
It is only possible to book in advance and online. We are usually fully booked a few days in advance. The website shows live availability. A session includes exclusive use of the slope and the instructor. There will be no other customers on the slope at the same time as you.
Learning to ski or board naturally comes with slips and falls. We prioritize your safety. Our knowledgeable instructors are well-trained in techniques that help minimize the impact of falls, and they have a remote control to halt the slope if necessary. Our specialized surface is more forgiving than traditional snow and ice, making those inevitable falls a little less painful on your journey to conquering the slopes.
We will always have a instructor on duty with a minimum qualification of BASI UK level 1, sometimes they
may be accompanied by a trainee instructor. We always ensure we have one instructor on duty to teach both skiing and snowboarding.
All of our staff have been DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) checked.
The slope can accommodate up to three children or two adults at a time. Because it is very tiring to ski or board for more than ten minutes non stop (imagine skiing from the top of a mountain to the bottom without stopping) we recommend sharing a session, taking it in turns to ski and rest. We recommend no more than two people per half hour session.
You are welcome to bring spectators provided that there are not more spectators than skiers, except in the case of parents/grandparents watching a child skiing alone.
We recommend a minimum age of five for skiing and eight for boarding.
Our terms and conditions for standard sessions allow customers to reschedule their booking if this is done a minimum of 48 hours before the start of their session. See our terms and condition for full details.
Peak hours are when children are out of school including all weekends and school holidays
Off peak hours are term time weekdays between 9am and 4pm,
This does mean that school age children will always be skiing in peak time.
For skiers we provide Skis, boots, poles and helmets
We have skis from 90cm up to 160cm which is the longest any adult will need on this type of slope. We
have boots from Size 14.5 Mondo (UK children’s size 8) up to size 32.5 Mondo (UK adult size 13)
For snowboarders we have equipment from eight years old upwards.
You are very welcome to bring your own boots (not touring boots though) however you must use our skis because they have been de-waxed, and the edges have been de-tuned to suit the surface of the slope.
(Ski boots are measured in Mondo size which is an international measurement which equates to the length of the foot in cm)
Helmets are mandatory.
Any sensible clothing suitable for sport is fine but we do put water on the slope so you may get a bit damp! we advise you wear a long-sleeved lightweight top and loose-fitting trousers to protect elbows and knees from abrasion, (tracksuit bottoms are ideal, but not jeans as they absorb a lot of water!). Long socks are the best option for your feet to fit ski boots as snugly as possible. The ski hall is kept between 15°C and 18°C so bring a coupe of layers. You won’t need to wear your full winter skiing gear. It is warmer in the Clubhouse.
You will need to arrive approximately 10 minutes before your session to check in and be fitted with your equipment. Sessions are booked in increments of 30 minutes. Allow for ten minutes after the session to have a cup of tea in the Clubhouse and talk through your progress with your instructor.
Skiing or boarding on our slope is quite a work out because you don’t stop turning. Half an hour is quite enough for one person on one go, though if you are travelling from further away you might want to book two sessions with a break between to rest in the Clubhouse or go for lunch in the nearby pub.
Sharing a session is great fun. We recommend no more than two people per half hour of booking.
We can easily cater for people of different abilities in the same session by alternating ten minutes on and ten minutes off.
The surface we use is like a thick astro turf. It is more forgiving and softer than traditional outdoor artificial slopes but less forgiving than snow. This means the techniques you master on the South Wilts Ski Club
slope will be of a high level and you should find it easier when you transfer these techniques onto real snow. All the techniques taught by our instructors are the same as you would learn from instructors in a ski resort, indoor dome or on a dry slope.
The infinity slope is perfect for practicing parallel and carve turns. It tends to exaggerate any flaws in your technique and you are able to see yourself in the mirror and on video.
It absolutely will but please note there will be an adjustment period as you get used to the feel of the surface. With skiing there are no quick fixes so it is unlikely you will see the benefit of just one session;
however, one session will highlight issues you can work on the next time you go to the mountains. If you book a series of lessons, you will really start to feel the difference. Once you have adjusted to the surface the instant feedback from your instructor and the ability to look at your own technique in detail will really help you to progress your skills.
SWSC is very good for returning from injury, although you should check with your doctor or physiotherapist before booking a session. Our safety bar allows you to start very slowly reducing the risk of a fall. The responsive nature of the surface will highlight any weaknesses in your technique allowing you to focus on the key areas needing to development to get back to the mountains.
